Estimation of Phytochemical Composition of Guava Leaf Extracts and their Antimicrobial Activities against Different Microorganisms
Guava (Psidium guajava) leaves are used as therapeutic drugs in many countries all over the world. Different bioactive components are present in guava leaves that combat against various pathogens. The aim of the proposed study was to determine the antimicrobial potential of Guava leaves. Leaf extracts were prepared in methanol, ethanol and distilled water. Four components known as Saponin, Tannin, Terpenoid and Glycosides were observed phytochemically and then analyzed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Mueller Hinton Agar was used to check the antimicrobial activity by well-diffusion method, using synthetic antibiotics streptomycin and gentamycin to compare the sensitive zone. Organisms were highly susceptible to methanolic and ethanolic solutions as compared to distilled water. Both gram positive and negative organisms were susceptible to bioactive compounds present in guava leaves.
